Born in Georgia in 1943, Fred Wesley grew up in Alabama. He began his career as a trombonist with Ike and Tina Turner. He later became musical director, arranger, trombonist and principal composer for James Brown (1968-1975). He later played with Parliament-Funkadelic and Bootsys Rubber Band. With James Brown, Fred Wesley was his most famous partner, orchestrating the sinuous grooves and contributing the daring solos that defined funk
.
By teaming up with George Clinton and Bootsy Collins, he plays a key role in funk. Fred Wesley starred in the documentary film Soul Power, and won the Oscar When We Were Kings. He has contributed to numerous documentaries on James Brown and funk music. Wesley is one of the musicians who have worked on numerous musical projects. He has collaborated with Janet Jackson and Nas. Today, he plays and records with his own jazz-funk band. He shares his musical knowledge with young musicians and music students in educational settings around the world.
